November 1937-1945 Lord Sefton, Roderic Gubbins
Kingsdown Stables in Upper Lambourn was a project initiated by 7th Lord Sefton, Hugh William Osbert Molyneux, and completed in 1937. As well as stables and Kingsdown House there was a Head Lads house and 3 cottages. |
|
The first trainer to utilise the stables was Roderic Gubbins who moved from his Kingston Warren stables to the new stables in November 1937, bringing with him Our Hope, runner-up in the 1937 Champion Hurdle behind Free Fare. The horse quickly made amends for that defeat by winning the 1938 Champion Hurdle 5/1 in the hands of Perry Harding after impressively winning his warm up race, the Greenham Handicap Hurdle 100/7 at Newbury in February 1938. Gubbins continued to send out Our Hope in the 1940s, but without success in any major races.

1946-1955 Atty Persse
Harry Seymour Persse, universally known as Atty, was born in 1869 and was commissioned a second-lieutenant in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry on 28th June 1899, but resigned his commission on 13th September 1902. He began training shortly afterwards in 1903, training for a significant period in Stockbridge, sending out no less than 34 Royal Ascot winners from the Wiltshire stables, and was crowned Champion Flat race Trainer in 1930. His most famous horse was the grey flyer and spotted wonder, The Tetrarch, who won the 1913 Coventry Stakes at the Royal meeting when ridden by champion jockey Steve Donoghue, and was thought, at the time, to be the fastest two-year-old of all time. The horse also won the Woodcote Stakes, National Breeders Produce Stakes, Rous Memorial Stakes and Champagne Stakes. However, he developed serious leg trouble before he could start his three-year-old career, and never raced again. His first Royal Ascot winner, Sir Archibald, won the 1907 New Stakes, later renamed the Norfolk Stakes. In addition to the numerous Royal Ascot wins, Persse chalked up 4 English Classic successes, firstly with Sweeper (SR 1970) in the 1912 2000 Guineas, followed by the great Tetratema (SR 2077) in the 1920 2000 Guineas, with Silver Urn (SR 1866) landing the 1922 1000 Guineas, and finally in 1929 Mr Jinks (SR 1951) won the 2000 Guineas. Atty co-wrote the novel 'Trainer and the Temptress' which was made into a silent film in 1925. He continued to train at Stockbridge until after the Second World War, moving to Lambourn in 1946 just two years after his only son tragically died. He continued to build on his Royal Ascot successes whilst at Kingsdown Stables, winning the 1948 Britannia Stakes with Marconi for Lord Sefton, followed 3 years later by a Royal Ascot treble, firstly with Bob Cherry in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, backed up by Val D'Assa in the Royal Hunt Cup, and completed by Stephen Paul in the King Stand Stakes. His final Royal Ascot winner, when he was 83 years of age, was Queen of Sheba in yet another Royal Hunt Cup victory. His wife died in 1953, but Atty lived to the ripe old age of 91, dying on Monday 5th September 1960 in a Windsor hospital after collapsing at his Ascot home. In his will he bequeathed a painting of The Tetrarch by Lynwood Palmer to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, expressing the hope that the Queen would do him the honour of accepting the painting. His will amounted to £152,668 which, in todays terms, was worth £2.8 million, the larger share of which went to his 18-year old great nephew Richard Persse, then in the Royal Marines. |

1955-1976 Major Peter Nelson
Peter Nelson, born in 1913, served in the Royal Berkshire Regiment, reaching the post of Major during his 4-year tenure, but in 1947 he successfully applied for a trainers licence, basing himself at the Old Malthouse Stables in Lambourn. In 1955, after the legendary, Classic winning trainer Atty Persse retired, Nelson took over Kingsdown Stables in Upper Lambourn. Peter was married to Marguerite and they were blessed with 2 sons, John and Charles, who both followed their father into training racehorses. Peter's most famous winner was Snow Knight who unexpectedly landed the 1974 Epsom Derby by 2 lengths at 50/1 in the hands of Brian Taylor. However, Peter was not a one trick pony, for he registered 7 Royal Ascot victories, firstly in the 1951 Bessborough Stakes with Proud Scot 100/6, before winning the 1952 Coventry Stakes with Whistler 2/5 fav, then Weeber 10/1 won the 1955 Queen Mary Stakes; Greek Streak 100/8 won the 1966 Fern Hill Stakes, better known as the Sandringham Stakes; the 1969 King Edward VII Stakes went to Vervain 10/1, Trinity Term 6/4 fav won the 1970 Chesham Stakes, while his final winner came in the 1974 Kings Stand Stakes with Bay Express 9/4 fav . He enjoyed raids at the Glorious Goodwood meeting, landing the 1962 Stewards Cup with Victorina owned by Sir B Mountain, and repeating the success in the same difficult to win race in 1971 with Apollo Nine. Peter retired in early 1976 and handed his licence over to his eldest son John who trained at Kingsdown for a year. Peter collapsed and died in February 1998 aged 85, while his wife Marguerite died on 24th June 2004, both being buried in Upper Lambourn cemetery.

Early 1976-January 1977 John Nelson
John Nelson, born in 1952, is the oldest of 2 sons of Peter and Marguerite Nelson and followed his Derby winning trainer into the profession. When his father retired in early 1976 John took over his licence, having been his assistant prior to taking over the reins, but within a year John had moved to new stables at Kings Farm, adjacent to Kingsdown Stables, allowing younger brother Charles to bring his 21 strong string to Kingsdown. |
January 1977-1992 Charlie Nelson
Charlie Nelson, born in 1955, is the second son of Peter and Marguerite Nelson, and rode as an amateur jockey for a short period, but he was destined to become a trainer. He had already established a strong string of 21 horses when his older brother John allowed Charles to take over Kingsdown Stables, while John moved to new stables next to Kingsdown. Charles trained for 17 years, gaining 3 Royal Ascot successes, initially with Marouble 20/1 in the 1985 Norfolk Stakes, followed a year later by Ministrella in the 1986 Chesham Stakes, and finally gaining a surprise win in the 1988 Royal Hunt Cup with Governorship at 33/1. In August 1986, despite still making full use of Kingsdown Stables, he moved quickly to buy Berkeley Stables from Sheikh Mohammed, the Sheikh having spent a large sum modernising those stables. He also enjoyed Goodwood meetings, striking a double in 1986 with Double Schwartz in the King George Stakes, and Rich Charlie in the Richmond Stakes. He decided to retire from the training ranks after 17 years as a trainer, at which point Mick Channon transferred from the 25 box Saxon Gate stables to the 50 box Kingsdown Stables.

1994-1998 Mick Channon
Mick Channon, born in Orcheston, Wiltshire on 28th November 1948, retired from professional football in 1986 and immediately set about pursuing his dream of becoming a racehorse trainer, acting as assistant trainer firstly to John Baker in Devon and then Ken Cunningham-Brown in Hampshire. He applied for a licence in October 1989, but was turned down on a technicality, but in late December the Jockey Club finally granted him a licence. He launched his training career at Saxon Gate stables, owned by Fulke Walwyn and leased to Simon Christian until he transferred to Mercy Rimell's old yard at Kinnersley. He started with 10 horses, but soon had a full yard of 25 horses at Saxon Gate, which included 4 National Hunt horses, and saddled 16 winners in his first season, the first of which was owned by fellow England footballer Kevin Keegan. One of his most successful horses in the early part of his career was the filly You Know The Rules, who won twice at Sandown in 1990, and notched up 4 further victories in 1991, including the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap at Sandown and the Sceptre Stakes at Doncaster. He transferred from Saxon Gate to larger premises at Kingsdown Stables and managed to fill all 50 boxes. In his early years at Kingsdown he won the valuable William Hill Trophy in 1993 at York with Aradanza, although the first horse to really put his name on the map was Piccolo, who won the 1994 Chipchase Stakes at Newcastle before springing a surprise at 14/1 in the Nunthrope Stakes at York. Piccolo rewarded Mick with a first success at Royal Ascot in 1995 in the King Stand Stakes. The ill-fated Bint Allayl won the 1998 Queen Mary Stakes at the Royal meeting, after winning the National Stakes at Sandown, later going on to capture the Lowther Stakes at York, but during the winter she required surgery to an injured hock. It was thought she had fully recovered ready for her 3-year-old career, but it was then discovered she had an untreatable spinal fracture of her left-fore humerus and she was euthanized. Mick won the National Stakes the next year with Sheikh Ahmed's Rowaasi, but by then he had left Lambourn, moving just down the road to West Ilsley in 1999.

1999-2006 Jamie Osborne
James Anthony Osborne, born on 28th August 1967, was raised in Yorkshire into a family well-connected to racing. His father, Tony, used to hunt and became a Director at the beautiful Market Rasen racecourse in Lincolnshire, and from an early age Jamie remembers riding ponies. He looked forward to his Summer holiday breaks from education, working in the yards of masters of their trade, David Nicholson at Jackdaw's Castle and Josh Gifford at Findon, and after completing his compulsory education he rode as an amateur at Harry Wharton's stables, riding his first winner for that trainer on 29th March 1986 when Fair Bavard won the Calverton Handicap Hurdle for Amateur Riders at Southwell, and then joined the Castleford stables of Chris Bell. The next year, 1987, having accumulated 14 winners as an amateur, he joined the Nicky Henderson yard in Lambourn and turned professional, although the decision was a gamble given that many more jockeys were higher up the pecking order at Henderson's at that time. In mid-April 1989 he struck up a working relationship with Oliver Sherwood at Rhonehurst Stables when Oliver's brother Simon decided to retire from race riding and later joined the training ranks, and the next season he partnered Arctic Call to win the Hennessey Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury. Jamie recorded his first Cheltenham Festival victory in 1991 in the Grand Annual Chase aboard Aldino, and enjoyed an incredibly successful 1992 Festival by landing an 84/1 treble, winning the Queen Mother Champion Chase on Remittance Man (Evens fav), the Stayers Hurdle on the Robert Sangster owned, and Barry Hills trained Nomadic Way (15/2), and the Arkle Chase Challenge Trophy aboard Young Pokey (4/1), a horse which he had already driven to victory the year before in the Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown. He repeated his victory in the Arkle Chase in each of the next two years, firstly in in 1993 on Travado (5/1) and again in 1994 on Nakir (9/1). Although he enjoyed very little luck in the Aintree Grand National, finishing unplaced in 1991 on Master Bob, Whats The Crack in 1992, 1993 Latent Talent, 1994 Garrison Savanah, 1995 Crystal Spirit, he did manage second place on Sunny Bay in 1997 when beaten by Lord Gyllene, but he had more success in the Irish Grand National which he won in 1995 aboard Flashing Steel. He landed the Hennessey Gold Cup for a second time in 1996 when partnering Coombe Hill, and the Irish Champion Hurdle with Collier Bay. In Spring 1999 he married his long-time partner, the artist Kate O'Sullivan at Newbury Registry Office and they have one daughter, Saffie, who followed her father as a jockey. He took out a Trainer's Licence in 1999 with a view to renting 50 boxes at Kingsdown Stables, Upper Lambourn once Mick Channon upped sticks and moved to West Ilsley. Jamie spent a few years at Kingsdown, and even took some boxes at Saxon Cottage Stables in 2005 before he transferred to The Old Malthouse Stables, also in Upper Lambourn. |
2001-2003 Gary Brown
Gary Brown only learnt to ride a horse at the age of 23, but he was encouraged by his friend, the trainer Gary Moore, and went on to win the 1994 Martell Foxhunters Chase at Aintree on the John Manners owned Killeshin at 8/1. He had already ridden winners for Manners, including a 100/1 winner in a Leicester maiden chase, but his riding career was cut short on 3rd November 1995 in the Undergear Terra Tire Novices Chase at Uttoxeter. He was riding the unfancied Regal Aura 66/1 which fell at the first fence, rupturing Gary's spleen and pancreas, and ironically bringing down the horse named 'No Pain no Gain'. In 1999 he decided to launch his training career and was based next door to Kingsdown Stables, Upper Lambourn at Kings Farm Stables for 3 years from 2001, moving to Middle Pond, Ermin Street, Lambourn Woodlands and then spending 6 years at Sir Tony McCoy's yard. He retired from the training ranks in 2014, but returned a few years later. |
2011-November 2016 David Lanigan
David Lanigan, son of Bob and Deirdre Lanigan, was born on his parent's farm at Tullamaine Castle in Tipperary, Ireland where he was fortunate to have access to racehorses. He spent 5 years working at Walmac Farm, in Kentucky, owned by Johnny T L Jones, before his appointment as assistant to Sir Henry Cecil at Warren Place Stables, where he spent an invaluable 5 years, including the time when Light Shift (SR 1811) won the 2007 Epsom Oaks for the Niarchos family. David then decided that he had gained sufficient experience to apply for his own trainer's license. He took over Revida Place in 2007, during which time he enjoyed particular success with fillies, guiding Meeznah to victory in the Group 2 Park Hill Stakes and the Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, both times partnered by Frankie Dettori. In 2011 David was enticed by owner Bjorn Nielson to Kingsdown stables, Upper Lambourn, where he spent a successful 5 years, training over a century of high-class winners, including a first Royal Ascot success when Interception won the 2015 Wokingham Stakes. He also had high hopes for Main Sequence after the colt's victory in the Lingfield Derby Trial, its fourth success in a row, but the colt had to play second best to Camelot (SR 2018) in the Epsom Derby, being soundly defeated by 5 lengths. In November 2016, his contract with Nielson at an end, David was excited by the prospect of returning to Newmarket to train at the newly refurbished Rathmoy Stables, renovated at a cost of approximately £1 million by Qatari businessman Abdullah Mana Al-Hajri.

December 2016-present Ed Walker
Ed Walker, former assistant trainer to both Roger Charlton and Luca Cumani, began training in his own right in 2010. In October 2010 he moved to the 24 box Authorized Yard at St Gatien, where he won the Listed Hyde Stakes in November 2010 at Kempton Park when Riggins dead-heated with Fanunalter. In December 2012 he transferred to Grange House Stables, where he trained for just one season, before leasing Warren Place in December 2013 after the death of Sir Henry Cecil. During his time at Warren Place he trained the 2014 Bengough Stakes winner Lightning Moon, while in 2015 he achieved Group 1 successes with Stormy Antarctic and Mutatis Mutandis.
